Sarah Griffiths, Physiotherapist
The plastic surgery hand therapy team at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (STHK) has been using Refero’s telehealth platform for consultation and therapy rehab sessions since April 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Sarah Griffiths, Physiotherapist at STHK:
“Hand therapy is essential for post-operative hand trauma, our patients require weekly review to check movement as well as tendon integrity. This development in telehealth technology and the video consultation process has enabled our sessions to be interactive, visualising patient’s progress.
It has been beneficial to give advice on wound care and scar management post-operatively, reassuring patients and safely giving appropriate advice. Being able to see how a patient is completing their exercises allows the team to refine and correct movement patterns, which isn’t possible via a telephone call alone.
This also allows the hand therapist to safely progress patients, as we can ensure the patient is understanding the exercises being completed in a safe manner. Our team covers a large regional area, so our patients have also found the telehealth clinics very beneficial as we’ve been able to review our patients who usually travel a great distance from North Wales, Cheshire, Merseyside and the Isle of Man.
Our patients are now able to receive close monitoring without needing to travel, allowing us to identify concerns and manage these before they become a complication. We’ve had really positive feedback from the patients involved who’ve been very pleased with the care provided via telehealth clinics, as they feel supported in a safe environment at home, and are saving on any cost implications of the petrol and car parking charges.”
